“Presidential Scholarship Luncheon”
The Right Honorable Tony Blair was the keynote speaker at the annual Presidential Scholarship Luncheon presented by the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation.
The sold-out crowd convened at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel for the rare opportunity to hear Mr. Blair on his first visit to Cleveland and Ohio. WKYC-TV News Anchor and Education Reporter Kim Wheeler was emcee for the program preceded by the singing of the National Anthem and the invocation by Cantor Sarah Sager. Tri-C President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton acknowledged Rena Olshansky, who in 1992 initiated the luncheon that since its inception has raised more than $8.4 million, with this year exceeding $1 million, for student scholarships.
“Education is the best long-term policy a nation could have,” said Mr. Blair whose speech was laced with anecdotal humor. “As the world becomes smaller, it is more important to be open-minded about people. Knowledge is the most precious liberator of the human spirit.”
Tri-C is establishing the Global Resource Center Scholarship in honor of Mr. Blair, who received a personalized Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jacket, an appropriate souvenir for a man who once played in a rock band. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
