“G-Clef Ball”

United States Senator Sherrod Brown and his wife Connie Schultz, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, were honored by the Cleveland POPS Orchestra at its annual G-Clef Ball.
Sondra Boyd was chairman of the benefit attended by some 200 guests who began the evening at the InterContinental Hotel with cocktails as Dr. Marshall Griffith entertained at the piano. The ballroom was the center of the festivities, with dinner tables between the silent auction display and the orchestra stage. Beautiful centerpieces of silk flowers from Pat Catan’s were illuminated by votive candles.
Cleveland POPS founder, music director and conductor Carl Topilow and his wife Shirley Morgenstern presented awards to Senator Brown and Ms. Schultz prior to dinner and the fabulous musical performance that began with a “South Pacific” medley. Joining the orchestra was soprano Brenna Hanson singing selections from “La Boheme,” “Kiss Me Kate” and ‘Wonderful Guy’ from “South Pacific” before the concert’s conclusion with drummer George Judy’s solo of Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.”
Finally, Mark Schroeder began the live auction that included pledges to Actual Music, the Cleveland POPS Orchestra’s school program targeting five- to seven-year-old students, the audience and performers of our musical future. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
