“The Beefeaters Ball”
The Beefeaters Ball, hosted by and for the benefit of the English-Speaking Union, was held at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club.
About 110 guests were greeted by bagpiper Donald B. Willis and by Ohio Dance Theatre ballet students. The festive evening began with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Phyllis Donnelly-Ingold served as both benefit and auction chairman who said that she couldn’t possibly have managed without the support and help of her husband John.
Before dinner, everyone stood for the traditional toasts to President George W. Bush and to Queen Elizabeth II given by Mary Hamlin and E-SU President John Rampe, respectively. After popping open party crackers, filled with favors and paper crowns, guests enjoyed a delicious entrée of beef tenderloin medallions with Béarnaise sauce before concluding the meal with peppermint stick ice cream and chocolate sauce. Post-dinner entertainment included excerpts from “Sleeping Beauty,” “Bluebird” and “The Nutcracker” performed by five students from the Ohio Dance Theatre under the direction of artistic director Denise Gula. The evening concluded with music for dancing by Stolen Moments.
Proceeds from the party enable the English-Speaking Union to sponsor its annual Shakespeare Competition for high school students from Cuyahoga County public, private and parochial schools. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
