“Red & White on Thursday Night”
Akron’s premier food and wine-tasting party, benefiting the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, attracted more than 700 guests.
Lisa Kermizis Abraham and Debra Sherman were co-chairmen of the 12th annual Red & White on Thursday Night held at the John S. Knight Center where about 50 patrons were treated to tastings of three boutique vintages from Gregory Graham Wines and later, from Soquel Vineyards, Pyramid, a meritage (a neologism for three specific varietals grown on American soil). The top sponsors were recognized with special presents of jaunty skeletal figurine pin/pendants.
“Bones, arthritis, get it?” said Lisa of the gifts — light-hearted but serious reminders of arthritis that affects people of all ages. Of the 1.5 million people in NE Ohio with arthritis, more than 70,000 people annually are served by the Chapter, nationally recognized as a leader for its ratio of service delivery to the individuals it reaches.
Some 20 local restaurants donated food to accompany nearly 80 wines provided by five distributors. TK O’Grady of WONE was emcee for the program that included pledges to Key to the Cure, introduced by Megan and John Faust. Their daughter, now two, was diagnosed with arthritis in every joint in her body when she was just a baby.
A Napa Valley trip was won by Deb Tavanello, and the popular Vegas Dice Roll for a trip to the Strip was won by Canice Barnett. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
