“Luau on the Lake”
The invitation said “rain or shine,” and the nearly 500 tropically attired guests on Whiskey Island got a bit of both. For the third year, Shoes and Clothes for Kids put on a flip-flops-and-Hawaiian-shirt luau at Wendy Park by the lake, and this one was the biggest and best ever. Fortunately for the planners, a huge, temporary shelter had been put up for another event the following week; when a sudden, brief summer downpour hit, people grabbed the buffet tables, pulled them inside and the party kept on going.
“We’ve doubled everything from last year,” said Executive Director Valerie McCormack.. “Attendance, dollar goal, activities. It’s been great!” The incredibly reasonable ticket price ($35 and $50 at the door) included a supper of grilled chicken and pork, sides, dessert and unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks…what a bargain! There was a raffle for some very nice prizes, including Browns tickets, rounds of golf and a “margarita-party-in-a-basket” for those who wanted to keep the good times rolling. Cornhole boards and volleyball courts were kept busy, while many people brought lawn chairs and savored the incredible Lake Erie sunset.
The money raised, an expected $10,000, will be used to support Shoes and Clothes for Kids’ many programs and services that provide new apparel for thousands of children in need in Northeast Ohio. STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN. PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN BASHIAN
