“Darwin”
The Great Lakes Science Center is the first venue to host “Darwin” in this country following its triumph in London at the Natural History Museum, which collaborated with Boston’s Museum of Science, Chicago’s Field Museum and Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum to present the exhibit organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
“We’ve exceeded our fund-raising goal by 50 percent,” said Dr. Linda Abraham-Silver, GLSC president and ceo. “We have had major support from Richard Morrison through his foundation, allowing us to have 88 science teachers from 28 institutions here as guests for the preview. We’re very excited to have the exhibit here, as this is the International Year of Darwin, 200 years since his birth and 150 years since publication of his “’Origin of Species.’”
More than 300 people attended the premiere of which Roseanne Oatey served as chairman and Case Western Reserve University President Barbara Snyder as honorary chairman. Pianist Marshall Griffith, bassist Marc Better and saxophonist Ed Michaels provided entertainment as people bought chances for a Chinese auction, their purchase including a choice of toy rare species of monkey.
The exhibit is divided into eight sections, each highlighting Charles Darwin’s life and work, including his discoveries on his voyage on the HMS Beagle to the Galapagos Islands and a stunning reconstruction of his study.
Additional activities for guests were seeing animals from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, interacting with GLSC educational stations and a screening of the Galapagos film in the OMNIMAX Theater. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
