Cars, cabernets and cuisine all came together for a delightful and profitable evening for The Western Reserve Historical Society. The Barrington Napa Classic, sponsored by Fred Baker and Fred Baker Audi, is one of the summer’s premier events, and this year was no exception.
Rain during the day moved seating inside the elegant clubhouse and food and wine stations under cover. But by six, skies cleared and all 350 guests were able to venture outdoors.
Volunteers from the Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum, under the energetic eye of Curator Allen Unrein, brought in some WRHS treasures, among them a Ford Model T, 1960 MGA and 1911 Hupmobile. But what made the guys act like 10-year-olds at Christmas was a 1913 Austro-Daimler race car chassis, the first designed by Ferdinand Porsche himself and the only one in the world. No rides in this one, but most vehicles were available for tours around the lake.
Back in the clubhouse, more than 60 superior reds, whites and dessert wines were available for tasting, while Barrington chefs offered beef tenderloin and mini lobster tails, gourmet raviolis (think lobster or truffle) plus a sushi bar and a raw bar. The popular chocolate fountain made a return appearance for dessert.
Reaching WRHS’ modest goal of $50,000 seemed to be no problem, what with a live auction that included a bid of $15,000 for the Olympic Torch used by Mohammad Ali in the 1996 Los Angeles games.
