“G-Clef Ball”
There’s no doubt that people are being careful with their money these days. There has been a noticeable decline in benefit attendance this fall but people will still turn out for their favorite organizations.
Such was the case with the G-Clef Ball, with 200 fans of the Cleveland POPS Orchestra coming together at the InterContinental Hotel for a night of music and camaraderie. Medical Mutual of Ohio was the corporate sponsor of the night with a number of other businesses represented on the host committee.
Honoree of the evening was the personable Terrance C.Z. Egger, publisher, president and CEO of The Plain Dealer. It was a fitting tribute since it was The Plain Dealer which was the very first sponsor of Cleveland POPS when it came into being in 1996. After promising ”the shortest remarks ever given by an honoree,” he thanked everyone for “all you’ve done, your passions and commitment” and also promised the 1,000 employees of the newspaper “we’ll keep your newspaper alive for you.”
Of course, the Cleveland POPS delivered a delightful concert for their ardent fans which included a special appearance by young violinist Chad Hoopes, who at age 15, already is developing an international reputation.
Sondra Boyd chaired the party which included a silent and oral auction and was expected to raise $40.000. Of note were the cleverly dressed teddy bears, which were individually accessorized by Billie Kater and named for PD staffers.
