“Yale Ball”
The Yale Alumni Association of Cleveland celebrated the 75th anniversary of the very first Yale Ball presented in 1934.
Bill Stewart, Jr. (Y ’99) and his wife Heather were co-chairmen of the festive evening held, as was the first ball, in the Whitehall and Gold Rooms at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Nearly 290 Yale alumni and guests had cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while bidding on the silent auction, organized by Bill Stewart, Sr. (Y ’65), that featured university memorabilia in addition to a variety of special items.
As everyone was seated for dinner, the Stewarts together raised a toast “to God, Cleveland, and to Yale!” In addition to welcoming the guests, Bill, Jr. also read a congratulatory letter from Yale President Richard C. Levin. Traveling from New Haven were Mark Dollhopf, executive director of the Association of Yale Alumni, and Ilona Emmerth, director for Major Cities, to present the inaugural alumni leadership volunteer award to Baiju Shah, founder and president of Bulldogs on the Cuyahoga. Its unique and innovative program was established to provide summer internships to current matriculating Yale students as a way to encourage them to work in Cleveland after graduation. Proceeds from the ball will benefit both the Yale Alumni Scholarship Fund of Cleveland and Bulldogs on the Cuyahoga.
No Yale Ball would be complete without dancing and there was plenty of that to mostly classic Motown music by Twist. Boola boola! STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
