Forest enchantment was the theme of the 107th Charity Ball benefiting Akron Children’s Hospital.
Since 1951 Akron’s premier social event has included a  debutante presentation of young women whose parents and grandparents have made significant volunteer contributions to the community. Karen Silver was chairman, assisted by co-chairmen Peg Stalter and Judy Stecz, of the gala held at Goodyear Hall, its massive space filled with nearly 1,000 guests. Following the cocktail reception, everyone was seated for the formal presentation during which each of the 42 debutantes, escorted by her father and carrying bouquets created by Flowers by Dick & Son, was announced individually by master of ceremonies Dale Koblenzer. The Jack Purcell Big Band Orchestra of Pittsburgh played as fathers and daughters executed the traditional Grand March through the ballroom.
Don Vanderbrook, who has designed the ball decorations for 34 years, transformed the presentation stage into a forest glen of River Birch trees whose branches were adorned with sprays of orchid-like white faux flowers. Banks of ferns bordered with white cyclamen created the illusion of woodland paths. Hundreds of strands of thousands of tiny lights were suspended from the rafters they obscured. Tall and short table centerpieces, filled with alstromeria, roses, lilies, stock and delphinium, were on the tables for the delicious four-course dinner catered by Sammy’s.
Proceeds were expected to exceed $100,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital where its young patients were also the beneficiaries of this year’s debutante class’s service project of toys and blankets. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
