“2011 Charity Ball”

The Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital presented the 109th Charity Ball at Goodyear Hall. There were 615 supporters at the black-tie gala that is traditionally held between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Peg Stalter was the 2011 Charity Ball chairlady, with vice chairs Connie Nolte and Mary Briggs. As one of the most prestigious social events of the area, the ball upholds the grand old tradition of presenting debutantes. This year, 29 young ladies were selected, based upon their parents’ and grandparents’ volunteer contributions to the community.
Among the debutantes were two “legacy” girls, Shannon Hamilton and Natalie Robson, whose mothers and grandmothers also were presented at the Ball. Anna Kulwicki has a connection to the hospital, having spent her first two months in its NICU. Cousins Elizabeth Renner and Ashley George made their debuts together, just as their mothers had done.
Goodyear Hall has been the site of the ball since 1978. One would never guess that the space is actually an enormous gymnasium. Don Vanderbrook and his team make the space look heavenly with a profusion of tiny white lights hanging in strands from the ceiling. The highlight of the evening is the “Grand March,” as the young ladies are introduced, curtsy, and walk the length of the room accompanied by their fathers. Music by Cleveland’s Dan Zola Orchestra added to the glamorous ambiance.
The Charity Ball is the major fundraiser for Akron Children’s Hospital, and was expected to raise approximately $100,000 for patient care programs. STORY BY CAROLINE R. MERK/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
