Akron Children’s Hospital “Charity Ball”

Each December, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital presents the Charity Ball. The annual black-tie gala, now in its 112th year, drew 750 people to E.J. Thomas Hall. A major fundraiser for the hospital, the Charity Ball is also a highly anticipated social event as it upholds the tradition of presenting debutantes while acknowledging volunteerism.

The 36 young women presented at the 2014 Ball were chosen based upon their parents’ and grandparents’ service to the community. The girls represented 13 different high schools, with one already in college. Many of them had relatives who had preceded them as Charity Ball debutantes. The formal introduction, traditional curtsy and first dance took place on the stage of the auditorium.

Guests adjourned for dinner catered by A Taste of Excellence. The entrée featuring a trio of Ahi tuna, glazed short ribs and chicken Florentine was delicious. Special Request provided dance music.

Kathy Lane was the event chairlady and Tammy Gersman served as first vice chair. The Charity Ball was expected to raise $100,000 for patient care programs. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE R. MERK
