Grape Escape, benefiting the McDowell Cancer Center at Akron General, was held at Portage Country Club. More than 400 guests were greeted by Dan Leslie and his wife Heidi before posing for souvenir photographs. Fifteen area restaurants served delicious foods that were accompanied by wines provided by 15 distributors, with close to 200 varieties from which to choose. The silent auction, its two sections designated by grape-colored green or purple balloons, included two exquisitely-crafted wine bars among the many wine, entertainment and other packages.
“Grape Escape’s goals are work, be nice and accommodate,” said Alan Papa, president of Akron Medical Center, “qualities embodied by our planning committee, sponsors of McDowell and the needs of the Center.”
Since its inception, the benefit has raised three quarters of a million dollars, according to Dr. Andrew Fenton, medical director of McDowell Cancer Center. The proceeds, projected to be $100,000, will be used for the development of an art therapy program for cancer patients. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
