ALS Association “Strike Out ALS”

Almost 600 supporters came to Progressive Field for “Strike Out ALS” to benefit the ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter. Cocktails, the silent auction and a sit-down dinner took place right on the glorious field!

ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s moving “Luckiest Man Alive” speech, in which he bid farewell to his beloved sport of baseball. It was shown on the Field’s big screen.

Mary Wilson Wheelock, ALS Association executive director, made three award presentations. “Coach Sam” Rutigliano was the recipient of the Iron Horse Award which recognizes a member of the Northern Ohio sports community. For his commitment and investment in the mission of the ALS Association, James Beardsley, chairman and CEO of North Coast Container, received the Bob Feller Legacy Award. The DeGrandis Family Award was given to David Stuczynski and Team STU MAN Group. Despite his own battle with ALS, Mr. Stuczynski and the 400 members of his team set a state fundraising record of $101,132 in a recent Walk to Defeat ALS. The DeGrandis family founded “Strike Out ALS” in 1998 in memory of Joseph V. DeGrandis, who died of ALS.

“Strike Out ALS” was chaired, yet again, by Jenny Zinkan. The memorable evening was expected to reach its goal of $250,000. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE R. MERK
