Cattle Baron’s Ball

The Akron/Canton Cattle Baron’s Ball for the American Cancer Society was held for the first time at Hale Farm & Village in Bath, an ideal venue for the western-themed party. The crowd of 550 supporters got into the spirit with creative, Western attire.
During the VIP reception, professional roper, Richard Best, wowed onlookers outside, and Kathy Johnson performed on stage. Guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers while bidding on the silent auction and trying their luck in the “gamin’ area.”
.     Dingtown, a terrific local country western band, kept the dance floor hopping all evening!
Sammy’s handled the catering, featuring a delicious cowboy-sized entrée of molasses grilled sirloin of beef and goat cheese-stuffed chicken on a bed of wild spinach and marinated roasted tomatoes served with cheesy grits. Lynn Kelly, from WQMX 94.9, was the mistress of ceremonies during the program that included the presentation of the 2010 event honoree, Susan Flowers, a two-time cancer survivor. Auctioneer Brooks E. Ames, of Kiko Auctions, handled the live auction, including its annual, “Wrangle For Research,” an opportunity to make a direct contribution toward cancer research. This generous group pledged more than $50,000.
Chaired by Sherri Brown and June Netzley, the benefit raised nearly $175,000! The American Cancer Society’s mission is to save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well and to find cures. STORY BY CAROLINE R. MERK/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
