West Side Market, Wade Oval Park, the Warehouse District and East 4th street were just several of the sites where local artists created art and interacted with the public during the third-annual Color Me Cleveland.
Sponsored by the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, the event featured well-known and emerging Ohio artists creating art at some of the city’s favorite landmarks including the Free Stamp sculpture on Lakeside, Whiskey Island and Edgewater Park. For instance, sculptor Fred Gearhart stationed himself at the life-size Stegosaurus at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where he interacted with parents as they photographed their children riding and hugging the friendly beast.
The community-wide event gave children and their parents an opportunity to create their own art with materials provided at each site.
Following paint days, the work was delivered to the Artists Archives and culminated with a benefit auction of the art that featured radio personality Jimmy Malone, who served as emcee, and classical music, appetizers, wine and beer.
“Color Me Cleveland is special because it serves multiple purposes. It helps artists raise their public profiles, gives the community an opportunity to enjoy the creative process in a fun summer setting, and helps to financially sustain the AAWR and its important mission of preserving Ohio’s art. It also brings many of our community’s artists together for a common purpose,” Executive Director Kenneth Goerg said. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY SALI McSHERRY
