The American Cancer Society hosted its Cattle Baron’s Ball, sponsored by Continental Airlines that offered its hangar for the venue and a rare tour of the flight deck of its latest jet.
Some 425 guests dressed in Western attire posed for souvenir photographs with Tsammie, the horse of honor, owned by Tom and Diane Jones. Tsammie gave strength and companionship to Diane during her recovery from breast cancer chemotherapy. Linda Campbell, Charlene Novak and Lee Rosenberg were co-chairmen of the party whose honorees were Dr. Jerry Sue and Walter Thornton.
The space allowed for several tables of silent auction items and lavish fare of hearty down-home food prepared by Executive Caterers. Raffle tickets were sold, too, for a stunning double pendant designed and donated by Rock White of Bella Designs, won by Kara Hamulak.
Emcees were Monica Robins and John Lanigan who kept a tight rein on the program that featured remarks by Dave Grams, ACS North Region vice president, and Don McClure, ACS Ohio Division CEO. Auctioneer Curtis Tuggle took on the task of the live auction before helping with pledges for Wrangle for Research following guest speaker and cancer survivor Hal Becker, noted author and expert on sales, customer service and negotiating.
Casino gabling games continued until the featured musical performance by the 7 Bridges Eagles Tribute Band. Estimated proceeds exceeded $100,000 — the live auction alone raised $20K! STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
