Christ Child Society “Red Wagon Luncheon”

Nearly 500 guests turned out in support of the Cleveland chapter of the Christ Child Society for the annual Red Wagon Luncheon.

Presented at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, the benefit featured a boutique of 20 vendors, cash raffle, luncheon and showcase of fall fashions courtesy of Toni in Style in Chagrin Falls. Models included some Christ Child society members.

Chaired by Mary Graves, Red Wagon is one of two major fundraisers for the society and raised upwards of $25,000. Their other annual fundraiser is the Starlight Ball, planned for Dec. 2.

Past presidents of the organization were recognized during the luncheon as well as the national president. There were members in attendance from the Naples, Fla., and Akron chapters.

Ms. Graves said that among the organization’s focuses are mentoring and building strong literacy skills prior to kindergarten. As a result, the Cleveland chapter, which is one of 44 chapters nationwide, is introducing children to books and reading.

With origins dating back to 1887, the work of the Christ Child Society includes providing layettes to infants in need, as well as children’s clothing, bed and cribs, and enrichment programs.

The Cleveland chapter was organized in 1916 by Mabel Higgins Mattingly. Its mission is to foster a personal love of Christ expressing itself in service for needy children regardless of race, color or creed. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY SUE REID
