Eyes on the Prize

Eyes on the Prize, a fundraiser for the Cleveland Arts Prize (CAP), was a fun and funky affair, with 125 supporters converging on the Happy Dog. This retro neighborhood bar and live music venue is in the Gordon Square Arts District. Its claim to fame is that only hot dogs (veggie dogs too) are served, although the list of homemade toppings is a page long. Marcie Bergman, CAP executive director, selected the Happy Dog in part due to its location in the District, which won the CAP Martha Joseph Prize in 2010. “I always want to have a tie-in with the organization,” she said.
The Oberlin Jazz Ensemble played, as did the Cleveland Institute of Music Creative Music Ensemble. Saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio and percussionist Jamey Haddad put together the musical program. Adding to the great lineup was jazz trumpeter, Dominick Farinacci, who popped in to play. The Cleveland native was in town for a couple of days from NYC, where he’s been making a name for himself since graduating from Juilliard.
The silent auction featured works of art donated by previous CAP winners. The live auction featured five select packages. There was also a “paddle raise” for the endowment fund to help generate money for prizes in perpetuity.
Eyes on the Prize raised nearly $39,000. The 2012 Cleveland Arts Prize Awards Ceremony will take place on June 30 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. STORY BY CAROLINE R. MERK/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
