More than 1,100 supporters attended the HeartThrob Ball to benefit Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. Held at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center, the event raised more than $850,000. Umberto Fedeli served as event chairman, along with volunteer committee chair, Angie Spitalieri.
The Courage Awards honored three pediatric patients who were nominated and selected by virtue of having shown exceptional bravery and determination in dealing with serious, and often multiple, medical issues. Honorees were Kevin Fox, Christopher Goolsby and Andrew Szpotowicz.
Stefani Schaefer, WJW Fox 8 anchor, served as mistress of ceremonies. AVI Foodsystems prepared appetizers for the reception and a delicious dinner. Organizing and handling of on-site logistics was expertly handled by Amy Pappas and her company, AZA Events.
The featured performers this year were The Pointer Sisters! The two original members of the group, sisters Ruth and Anita, were joined by Ruth’s gorgeous granddaughter, Sadako.
Proceeds from the HeartThrob Ball will ensure the continuation of many critical programs, research initiatives and life-saving treatments. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE R. MERK
