An Evening with Scott Hamilton and Friends raised $1.1 million for the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute with an ice show at Quicken Loans Arena followed by a black-tie gala at the Renaissance Hotel.
Olympic winner and four-time world champion, Scott Hamilton, annually organizes and hosts the ice skating extravaganza. Among the dozen world-class skaters featured in the show were fellow Olympic gold medalists Dorothy Hamill and Evan Lysacek, Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen and U.S. junior bronze medalist Christina Gao. They performed to the music of guest star Vince Gill and his band. There were surprise appearances by Rodney Crowell, Brad Paisley and Sheryl Crow. The crowd of nearly 7,000 certainly got their money’s worth and then some! Sheryl Crow will be the headlining musical guest at next year’s event.
Maria Miller has been the gala chairperson since its inception 11 years ago.  She outdoes herself from year to year with magnificent décor and elegant dinners. There were 700 guests who attended the black-tie gala this year.
Mr. Hamilton was successfully treated for cancer at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute in 1999. He subsequently founded the Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship) to help others. An important component is the 4th Angel Mentoring Program that provides support to cancer patients by matching them up with cancer survivors. Chemocare.com is a Web site designed to help patients better understand their chemotherapy experience. Since its launch in 2002, it has helped more than 21 million visitors. Eradicating cancer is a key mission of CARES, which already has funded 21 new cancer research projects led by Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists. STORY BY CAROLINE R.
