Cleveland International Film Festival Opening Night Gala

A capacity crowd of more than 1,800 avid movie lovers welcomed the start of the 38th annual Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF).

Every theatre at Tower City Cinemas was filled for the opening night presentation of “Not Another Happy Ending,” a charismatic comedy out of the United Kingdom. The movie’s director, Scottish playwright John McKay, attended the Cleveland premiere.

The festival opened with remarks by Mark Smith, current president of the Cleveland International Film Festival, and Jules Belkin, past president. A gala reception at Post Office Plaza immediately followed the film.

The engineering firm Parker was the sponsor of opening night. Dollar Bank was the presenting sponsor for the second year. Medical Mutual funded the Community Engagement Program. In addition, The George Gund Foundation granted the CIFF a $500,000 loan to upgrade Tower City Cinemas with state-of-the-art digital projection equipment and sound equipment, as well as new screens.

This year’s Cleveland International Film Festival included 200 guest filmmakers, with 185 feature films and 168 short subjects, representing 68 countries. Neighborhood screenings were held at the Cedar Lee Theatre, Capitol Theatre, Beachland Ballroom, the Hanna Theatre and Cinemark Valley View. STORY BY CYNTHIA SCHUSTER EAKIN/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ERIC EAKIN
