“Summer Solstice”

After the glamorous and glorious opening of the new East Wing at the Cleveland Museum of Art, no one will ever again be able to think of the museum in exactly the same way as they always have. It’s always magnificent of course, but on this night, with a hot pink wall delineating the entertainment area, fireworks lighting the night and spotlights on the walls facing East Blvd., the Museum was the hottest spot in town. The joint was jumping right up until 2 a.m.
It was great to see the party people flocking in at 10 p.m. This party was broken into three sections, though if you had the stamina you could have partied from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. We even left before the fireworks, although we could hear them as well as the beat of the music after we got home.
Elan catering stationed tapas bars throughout the museum. Libations were flowing as were the crowds, a sellout at 2,500, we were told, who were up, down and around with all paths leading to the gorgeous East Wing, a home at last for contemporary art and photography at CMA. Young actor James Franco added a touch of glamour to the evening. He was with his grandmother Mitzi Verne and in town for a showing of his film, “Erased Franco,” set for the next day. He graciously let us take his picture (after a consult with his manager) with Museum Director Timothy Rub who expressed himself well pleased with his new wing.
There’s more to come between now and 2013 when the total renovation will be complete. STORY BY MARTHA TOWNS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY JEFF FARR
