Cleveland Museum of Art “New Year’s Eve Grand Celebration”

3…2…1…Happy New Year! As confetti flew and toasts were made, the Cleveland Museum of Art bid farewell to 2013 and hello to a new era of excellence. Nearly 1,200 people joined CMA staff and volunteers in The Atrium for a world-class gala that was actually a triple celebration: the start of 2014; the opening of the new West Wing Asian Art galleries; and the completion of the Museum’s ambitious eight-year remodeling project.

Chefs of “Provenance,” the museum’s restaurant, provided a delicious array of hearty hors d’oeuvres, while liquid refreshments flowed and the music of Burnt Sugar Arkestra entertained. Guests were also able to get a last look at the “Sicily” exhibit and a sneak peek at the incredible Indian, Southeast Asian, Chinese and Himalayan treasures (the public opening was scheduled for January 2).

But probably the most looked-at sight was the filmed “clock” projected onto the façade of the 1916 Building. Guests had a bird’s-eye view as two men with brooms moved the “hands” — two lines of construction debris — around and around as the minutes and hours passed, right up to midnight and the above-mentioned confetti shower. What a creative way to count down to the new year!

Bravo, CMA! Make a resolution to repeat this party next December 31! STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN/PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN BASHIAN
