Cleveland Public Theatre “Pandemonium”

Cleveland Public Theatre generated amazing energy at its annual Pandemonium benefit. This year’s gala, the eleventh, had the theme of “Shine” and raised $250,000.

Hundreds of the 1,250 guests arrived 30 minutes early. Waiting to gain entrance to the theater, they were mesmerized by performers in storefront windows painting amid antique radio parts. The entire campus of Cleveland Public Theater was transformed into environments and eighteen stages were given appropriate names, such as Aurora, Beacon Bar, Tesla’s Tower, and Skip the Light Fandango. On them, more than 100 performances happened. One stage featured stand-up comedy, and on another, excerpts from opera were sung. Roving atmospheric guests included six young ladies in gold body paint and a gentleman carrying a light bulb. Both illustrated meanings of the “Shine” theme.

Food was generously donated by restaurants of the Gordon Square neighborhood. In the courtyard, celebrity chefs served small plates. An assortment of interesting beers and wines were served from two bars. The theater recognized Nick Catanzarite with its “Pan Award.” Catanzarite’s grandfather opened the first Pat Catan store in Gordon Square and the company has been involved with Cleveland’s future through attention to neighborhoods. Following the award, guests danced and enjoyed desserts. STORY BY ART THOMAS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MULLER
