Stop looking for “party of the year” nominations. This year’s “Twilight at the Zoo,” the annual summer blast at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, takes the prize hands-down.
The sold-out crowd of 7,200 guests strolled the zoo grounds, stocked up on bar food and enjoyed unlimited Sam Adams beer, soft drinks and more. They sat and watched camels and sea lions and bears…and, oh my, all for just $75! VIPs — a hearty 500 this year — paid $150 for a private party around the lake with sumptuous fare from Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Flemings Prime Steakhouse and Mitchell’s Fish Market, plus unlimited cocktails and sweets from Panera.
If there weren’t as many animals on exhibit as in past years, that was a deliberate move to make them more comfortable during the noise from the bands — 16 to be exact — playing away in every nook and cranny of the 165-acre park. “Actually,” said Fiona Green from the Zoological Society, “we’re evolving into more of a major music festival.” With reggae, big band, rock, swing, Latin and cover bands from which to choose, there certainly was something for everyone.
Tara Turner, Director of External Relations, said the fantastic turnout would bring in more than $550,000 for Zoo programs. “This event is so popular we even had people posing as media people to try to sneak in!” Circle May 2012 on your calendars…that’s when tickets for the next “Twilight” go on sale.
