Convention Center, Global Center for Health Innovation offer great new space for your next big event

By CAROLINE R. MERK

A significant portion of social life in our city revolves around the benefit scene.  Therefore, new venues for parties and fundraisers are always of great interest. A new space is a novelty, and people are eager to see it and use it!

The newly renovated and vastly improved Cleveland Convention Center (CCC) along with the brand new Global Center for Health Innovation (GCHI) provide many new possibilities for events. The two comprise one giant, interconnected entity which encompasses a total of one million square feet.

GCHI has a soaring and spectacular atrium. The floors are terrazzo marble in cream and caramel laid out in a flowing irregular pattern. The entire east wall is floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the grassy mall. This is a wonderful space to use for the reception portion of an evening; it is not meant to be used for a sit-down affair. The adjoining junior ballroom was designed for that purpose. It can accommodate around 500 guests for a seated dinner. Additionally, a small outdoor area accessed from the junior ballroom can seat another 100 people.

The GCHI is a public building, and as such, there is access to the public during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone can come in and have a look, says Dave Johnson, GCHI and CCC director of Public Relations and Marketing. “Think of this as the Epcot of health care,” he says.

The CCC is now the most state-of-the-art convention center in the country, according to Dave. How’s that for impressive?! A dozen events a week are already booked, and the calendar is filling up for years to come with fundraisers, conferences, meetings and conventions. The grand ballroom has 32,000 square feet, translating into 1,800 people for a sit-down dinner. Its north wall features top-to-bottom windows with magnificent views of the lakefront. The pre-function area is between the grand ballroom and two large meeting rooms, each of which can be sub-divided into three. The pre-function area is perfect for registration and/or a reception. This entire space is below the largest grass rooftop on a public building in the U.S. Dave is full of interesting information!

The massive exhibit hall on the concourse level of the CCC encompasses 230,000 square feet. The old ceilings were 17 feet high, and are now 30-foot ceilings. It is considered a “class A” exhibit hall space. There are 35 additional meeting rooms with terrific Wifi assets, says Dave. Levy Restaurants is the exclusive caterer for the CCC.  Aramark provides all of the building services, such as setting up tables and chairs, vacuuming and cleaning floors. Colortone is the preferred AV provider, and Edlen Electrical Exhibition Services is the official utility contractor.
