“All Aboard Ball”

The All Aboard Ball to benefit the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad this year took more than 300 guests “home.” Held at the railroad’s Fitzwater Yard and Maintenance Facility, partygoers met at the Rockside Road station and took a 10-minute ride to the site. It was a first time visit for most.
The endlessly-inventive committee chaired by Greg Glenn with Mal Mixon as honorary chair kept the past tradition of a party unlike any other.
Not since the golden-era were rail travelers in black tie, sipping champagne while waiting for a train. Arriving at the yard, guests were greeted by board chairman Arnie de la Porte who sent them to multiple bars and hors d’oeuvres stations. Guests also examined up close the heavy equipment that is used to maintain the track.
Railroad President Steven Wait had the entire facility steam-cleaned and the workshop areas were spotless. In heels and gowns, women climbed into the elegant private car and domed observation car.
The close connection between the railroad and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park brought supporters of both groups to the event. Sammy’s catering served halibut and sirloin filets at dinner while Night Breeze was available for dancing.
The short live auction featured one-of-a-kind railroad items. A caboose trip for 10 including a “hobo dinner” with a celebrity chef was tops, and dozens of guests contributed varying amounts to get underserved school classes on ranger guided train trips.
