Don’t miss these perennially popular home and garden tours

By LAURI GROSS

How is it that spring takes us by surprise every year? We know it’s coming. We long for its arrival. And yet, somehow those first buds and blooms never fail to take our breath away and leave us amazed at the earth’s renewal process. Area home and garden tours take this inspiration one giant step further and invite area residents to get up close and personal with some of the most lovely gardens – and the homes where they are found. Here’s a sampling:

Your HomeTown Chagrin Falls Historic Home and Garden Tour

June 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Advance tickets are $25 and may be purchased at YourHometownChagrinFalls.com, or by calling 440.247.0900 or by sending a check (and your name and email) to: YHTCF, PO Box 335, Chagrin Falls OH, 44022. Up until 5 p.m. on May 31, tickets are also available at area businesses, as listed at YourHometownChagrinFalls.com. On tour days, buy tickets for $30 at the Chagrin Falls Visitor Center at 83 Main Street.

This walking tour features five historic homes and gardens in or within walking distance of the Village of Chagrin Falls. The homes on the tour are wood frame and brick construction and are predominantly examples of 19th Century architectural styles and types in the Italianate style by important Chagrin Falls builders. Tour highlights include an 1877 South Franklin Street home constructed by builder Frank Hunt, known for the invention of the Stranahan Folding Boat; an 1874 George Ober House designed in the Italianate style; two East Washington Street homes representative of the work of earlier builders and Englishmen William Hutchings, John Facey and Reuban Walters with Italianate style influences; and a Maple Street home representing a modern renovation of a historic village home. Docents will be on hand at each home to answer questions. Refreshments will be available at the George Ober House.

Before the tour, visitors must stop by the Visitor Center (Chagrin Falls Town Hall, at 83 Main Street) for a wristband, a fabric tote bag, a brochure with tour details, and more.

The Hudson Garden Club Home and Garden Tour

June 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and June 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Presale ticket vouchers are $20 and may be purchased by writing to the Hudson Garden Club Ticket Chairman, 205 S. Main Street, Hudson, OH 44236. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check for $20 per ticket voucher payable to Hudson Garden Club. Starting May 26, tickets that include the complete program and map will be sold (for cash or check) at Hudson’s Acme Fresh Market and Learned Owl Bookshop. On June 15 and 16, tickets are $25 (by cash or check). Ticket voucher holders can pick up the tour program/map at the ticket tent on the Village Green and at the Garden Shop in the Hudson Middle School, at 77 Oviatt Street.

For this, the 70th-anniversary tour, event organizers have chosen an “all-star lineup” of six favorite Hudson-area homes and gardens that have been on the tour in decades past, some brimming with Victorian charm. At each stop, volunteer hosts and hostesses will present facts of interest. Floral arrangements designed by Garden Club members with fresh material from local Hudson gardens enhance each home. Tour guests provide their own transportation between stops. The ticket price includes iced tea and homemade cookies served at the Hudson Middle School from 2 to 5 p.m. on both tour days. Proceeds from the Tour fund the Garden Club’s annual scholarships, grants, school programs, mentoring workshops, tree planting in Hudson and community gardening projects.

Gracious Gardens of Shaker Heights Garden Tour

Cocktails in the Garden June 16, 6 to 9 p.m.

Tour June 18, noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets for the June 16 cocktail party are $75 each.

Tickets for the June 18 tour are $20 in advance, or $25 beginning on June 12.

Tickets for either or both events can be purchased at the Shaker Heights Historical Society (16740 South Park Blvd.) or visit ShakerHistoricalSociety.org/graciousgardens for a list of Shaker Heights businesses where tickets are for sale. Also, the website includes a link to the Historical Society’s Facebook page where there is a link to purchase tickets online. The tour ticket also serves as the tour map so be sure to bring that with you to the event.

In addition to cocktails, the Cocktails in the Garden party includes hors d’oeuvres and live music in an incredible Shaker Heights mansion garden. The self-guided tour on June 18 includes eight stunning gardens. The event’s premier sponsors, Eastside landscaping and Liberatore Landscape Construction, helped create some of the gardens on the tour or donated services to the museum.

Tour-goers can drive or bike to each destination. During the tour, there is an open house at the Historical Society Museum and visitors can rent a bike from there. There will also be bottled water for sale at the Historical Society. The gardens on the tour are varied in designs and sizes and are all guaranteed fabulous. In many cases, the architecture of the home will inspire as much awe as the garden. At each stop, homeowners or volunteers will be ready to answer questions. Proceeds from these events benefit the educational and outreach programs of the Shaker Historical Museum, which is operated by the Shaker Historical Society.
