Editor’s Note July

This month’s issue of Currents is packed with benefit party coverage, as always. It’s heartening to read that even in rough economic times, Northeast Ohioans find a way to dig deep and give generously to the many wonderful nonprofit and arts organizations that service our region and its residents in so many ways.

Currents staffers strive to report dollars raised at the benefits we cover. Of the 115 events we covered that appeared in our January through June issues, our reporters were able to provide information about dollars raised for 56 of those 115 events, totaling more than $5 million dollars. So for those 56 events, that’s an average of about $90,000 raised per party. That’s impressive given an economic downturn that we haven’t seen the likes of for decades. Currents salutes all of these organizations, the hard-working volunteers, the area businesses and sponsors that donate time, products and services for the events. And we commend all of you who attend and give so generously in support of those who need it most in our communities.

Read more about a national study and report on nonprofit and charitable giving recently shared at an area conference on page A6.

Our seven-month Empowering Women series comes to an end this month, with stories about women making a difference and several area professionals who supported the series in Section B.

Cleveland Iron Chef and restaurateur Michael Symon certainly does not rest on his laurels as he recently has opened a new restaurant in Avon Lake, will open another one at Eton Chagrin Boulevard in the fall and has written a book with another Cleveland favorite, Michael Ruhlman, to be released soon. Read more about our favorite, self-proclaimed porkaholic on page B1.

We all love our homes, or some home in which we have lived. Artist Gary Peck illustrates homes for clients who then have something meaningful to share as a gift or hang on a wall for memories that last forever. Read more about Homefronts Illustrated and artist Gary Peck on page B12.

Next month, we launch a “Boomers and beyond” series planned to provide readers ages 50 to 65 with helpful information given their special issues, concerns and celebrations at this stage of life. Enjoy!  Kelli Cotesworth McLellan
