Editor’s Note November ’08

Well, whether we like it or not, the holiday season is upon us! If you’re like me, it seems like just a couple of months ago that I untrimmed the tree, stashed the lights and stored the decorations away in the basement — and now it’s nearly time to drag it all back out again! Where did the time go?

Well for me this year, I know much of it went toward following the exciting presidential race that for too many months just consumed me! Yes, this year I became a political news junkie! I read everything I could get my hands on and watched more cable and network news than I’m sure is good for a person.

But now, with the election over and several weeks before president-elect Obama officially becomes the 44th President of the United States, we news junkies need to refocus our attention. Our votes were tallied, our voices heard and now it’s time to look forward to the hope the beginning of each holiday season brings — and the hope we all harbor for brighter tomorrows for our families, our friends, our neighbors and our country.
It may be a different kind of a holiday season for many. The headlines remain grim on just about every front. With the economy in the shape it’s in, we may not be shopping ’til we drop this season. But maybe that’s the good news. Maybe our gifts this year will be just a little more selective and special. Maybe we scale back a bit, but give more freely from our hearts. Maybe we share more of our time and our talents than our treasure this year. Maybe we schedule special time to enjoy the company of our families, friends and neighbors. That is the true beauty and magic of the season which lies just ahead.

I hope as you read through this issue of Currents, that you are reminded that with all the bad news we read daily in our papers just look at all the good that people are doing right here in Northeast Ohio! Currents is privileged to cover and report monthly that hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised for area arts and nonprofits organizations by generous people who choose to give of their time, talent and treasure, even when times get tough. That’s great news and that’s hope and proof on just about every page that we can and should dig deep, even when times are tough, and maybe especially when times are tough, to help our fellow man.
May your Thanksgiving holiday be filled with blessings, gratitude and hope. — Kelli Cotesworth McLellan (Photograph by Itamar Gat)
