The legendary Hank Aaron was the guest speaker at the sixth annual benefit for the Yoder Brothers Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Foundation president Jack J. Menosky is the grandfather of brothers Joshua and Tyler Yoder who died in tragic accidents seven years apart.

The event, sponsored by SportsTime Ohio and hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dolan and the Cleveland Indians, was held at Signature of Solon where Indians’ mascot Slider greeted the more than 400 guests, among whom were many former Cleveland Browns football players. Later Mr. Aaron said, “I loved the Browns; I used to sit in the Dawg Pound to watch.” Cocktails and a silent auction preceded dinner that began with an invocation by the Rev. Daniel Schlegel prior to remarks by Kara Yoder, Joshua and Tyler’s mother. She asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of her brother Jack J. Menosky III who died suddenly a month before the benefit and then thanked everyone for supporting the Foundation that, since its inception in 1997, has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarship grants to Berkshire, Cardinal and Newbury High School senior student athletes.

After dinner, master of ceremonies Tom Hamilton, WTAM radio’s “Voice of the Indians,” interviewed Mr. Aaron, whose 755 home run career in 1974 finally shattered Babe Ruth’s 714 set in 1935. Mr. Aaron, inducted in 1982 into the Baseball Hall of Fame, was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002.

“My record stands,” said Mr. Aaron adding that he is proud of what he has accomplished subsequently, such as serving on the advisory board of the Boys and Girls Club of America and supporting fundraisers that help children. “Today [baseball] players have everything to keep them in shape. In my time, after baseball season, I sold beer for Miller’s!”

The evening concluded with a live auction conducted by Scott Mihalic. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
