Great Lakes Science Center “Yuri’s Night”

Remember that bar scene in the first Star Wars movie, (or is it actually the fourth)? Well, the Great Lakes Science Center might just as well have been the Mos Eisely cantina on Tatooine for the crazy confab of 1,200 creatures at the 2017 Yuri’s Night.

Star Trek crews mingled with Ava the inflated astronaut and the Yip Yip martians of Sesame Street on the dance floor while the Lumpy Space Princess checked out the sunset over the North Coast harbor with Space Elvis and the Guardians of the Galaxy Star Lord. Upstairs the sold-out VIP lounge saw the likes of Hans Solo, Princess Leia Organa, and Greg Johnson, an actual NASA astronaut who piloted the Shuttle Endeavour.

The space-age theme carried into the plastic soap rockets cranking out of a 3D printer and such star-grazing fare as Mason’s Creamery’s Ovaltine chocolate ice cream and Tang sherbet… yes, using the same orange drink mix on the menu for John Glenn’s 1962 Friendship mission.

Proceeds from GLSC’s out-of-this-world party, part of a global celebration of Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space, will support the Great Lake Science Center’s STEM education initiatives, day camp scholarships and other efforts to encourage scientific study and wondrous curiosity.
