Starry, Starry Night

Great Lakes Theater Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala evening at the InterContinental Hotel which drew nearly 500 people for an evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing and, of course, the obligatory silent and oral auctions. The “Raise the Paddle for Education” auction exceeded expectations as did the money raised at the party.
There was much catching up during cocktails as many guests were newly returned from their winter residences. Former GLTF director Vincent Dowling, handsome and charming as ever, and his wife Olwen were constantly surrounded as were Lidia Fee and her daughter Alexa, GLTF director Charlie Fee’s pride and joy. Charlie was the perfect emcee for the night.
One might have expected a little more pizzazz, perhaps a small performance, at this notable event, but instead it just turned out to be a jolly good evening in spite of the people who talked all through Pamela Myers’s performance which always annoys us to no end. Perhaps they will pay more attention as she performs in “Sondheim on Sondheim” at the Hanna Theatre through July 8.
Dinner included both Caesar and caprese salads followed by an entree of filet mignon and Scottish salmon. Miniature pastries and cupcakes were the perfect finale.
Robyn Barrie and her committee must be pleased as punch with the $200,000 or so that the party raised to help support the next 50 years. STORY BY MARTHA TOWNS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROB WETZLER
