“Cleveland Sports Awards”



    The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission hosted its 10th annual Cleveland Sports Awards, attended by nearly 1,200 people at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.
    Honorary chairmen were Paul Dolan, Dan Gilbert and Randy Lerner, owners of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Browns, respectively. Al Adams and Paul Greig were co-chairmen of the dinner that ensued during the program emceed by native Ohioan Kirk Herbstreit, award-winning ESPN College Football Analyst. A video highlighting the Commission’s sporting events and activities promotions that have generated $300 million in the Greater Cleveland community in the last 10 years preceded remarks by GCSC Board Chairman Fred DiSanto and President and CEO David Gilbert. Immediate past board chairman Bob Kain received the Commission’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
    Recipients of awards this year were amateur USA Track & Field athlete Jessica Beard; the University of Akron Men’s Soccer team; and wrestler Collin Palmer at St. Edward High School, its Wrestling Program also receiving special recognition. St. Ignatius High School track and field senior Gyasi Cooper, who lost part of his left leg after cancer diagnosis, received the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Courage Award. The Professional Athlete of the Year Award was given to Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, reclaiming the award for the fourth albeit not consecutive year. Recipients the last two years were former Cleveland Indians pitchers and Cy Young winners C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
