Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame “Induction Ceremony”

For 37 years, The Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame has celebrated the athletes, coaches and others who have distinguished themselves in amateur and professional sports from archery to wrestling.

About 300 attendees at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven recognized seven sports figures, some of whom continue to live in our area. Two are high school football coaches, Ted Ginn of Glenville and Chuck Kyle of Saint Ignatius. Also still in the area is inductee Mike Hargrove, baseball player and Indians’ manager.

The social hour before dinner was especially lively with guests actively moving and chatting with the inductees. Many past inductees and representatives of the organizations who make up the advisory board attended the event. Tucked in a quiet corner was Bob Costas who came to speak for inductee Harry Weltman, General Manager of the Cavs in the 1980s.

Another inductee was Earl Boykins, second shortest player in National Basketball Association history and graduate of Cleveland Central High School. His remarks at the ceremony were among the most assertive and inspirational. Dan Miller representing tennis and Pat Moris representing squash were also inducted.

Kudos to organization president, John Herrick, and master of ceremonies, Les Levine.  STORY BY ART THOMAS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT WETZLER
