“This is the benchmark, the one to measure future Society for Integrative Oncology Conferences,” said its president, Dr. Gary Deng, of the eighth annual SIO Conference in Cleveland.
He addressed his remarks to more than 140 guests attending the annual reception hosted by Helen Moss in collaboration with her eponymous Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Dr. Pamela Davis, dean of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The event held at Helen and Richard Fleischman’s home recognized the supporters of the Parker Hannifin – Helen Moss Breast Cancer Research Foundation Professorship in Integrative Oncology at CWRU School of Medicine. After being asked by Dean Davis to raise funds to establish the professorship, Helen worked tirelessly for more than a year and a half, concurrently with the diagnosis that her cancer had returned, securing money, notably the $750,000 lead gift from Parker Hannifin.
Cleveland Foundation Board member Dr. Maria Pujana presented Helen a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Frank Jackson during the program that included remarks by Dr. Nathan Berger, former CWRU Medical School dean, and Dr. Keith Block, SIO Conference chairman and director of Integrative Medical Education at the University of Illinois. To commemorate the occasion, Helen presented Dean Davis a pair of calla lily candlesticks, like those commissioned by the commandant of the United States Marines for Presidents Bush and Obama, that were handcrafted by Helen’s son Bill, a former Marine.
