The Ride the Rainbow Gala sold out with 1001 supporters. As the single-largest fundraiser for University Hospitals’ Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital (RBCH), the gala raised a record $850,000. Congratulations to event co-chairs Jill Clark, Laurel Conrad and Julie Cristal, all trustees of the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation. This year’s honorary chairs were Leonard and Joan Horvitz and Richard and Erica Horvitz and their families.
Dozens of children holding balloons greeted guests as they arrived at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. People-watching proved to be great fun due to the dress code that suggested “groovy chic,” inspired by this year’s theme, “Here Comes the Sun.” Many ladies came in ’60s attire reminiscent of London’s famed Carnaby Street, with white go-go boots and micro-minis.
Attendees were entertained by The Nerve, a band made up of University Hospitals’ physicians and staff. Highlights of the silent auction included a Medvac helicopter ride, a couple of rare and VERY expensive French wines donated by Tom Zenty, CEO of University Hospitals, and two tickets to a taping of Oprah’s final show.
Guests were led to the ballroom for dinner by the Berea High School marching band, to the tune of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. More than 250 paper lanterns were suspended above the dance floor which got very crowded as guests danced to The Return, an excellent Beatles tribute band. STORY BY CAROLINE R.
