Hopewell
“Summer Solstice”

Friends and supporters of Hopewell, the residential therapeutic community on a 300-acre farm in Geauga County, gathered at Clara Rankin’s lovely Hunting Valley estate.
This year’s party lured 460 people on a perfect summer night to mix and mingle between two barns where one of the best silent auctions anywhere is always placed and to dine on Sammy’s delicious food in a huge tent open to the soft air.
In keeping with what seems to be a trend, this was a party by committee with Mrs. Rankin, along with Bobbie Brown and the Ingalls Foundation as honorary chairs; Erin Hobey and Stacy Hunter, auction chairs, and Kathy Mahovlic decorations chair.
Auction bidders had a BidPal to work with which resulted in a lot of people walking around with their heads down watching their bids. I thought they were giving us cell phones. Enterprising Les Jacobs, via BlackBerry, was even sending photographs of bid items home to his wife Lee, who gave up her seat for a client. Listen, if even I can figure out how to work the techno marvel, you can too.
The party raised about $180,000 including a whopping $27,250 from the live auction, to “help a war veteran heal.” There was much cheering for that one. STORY BY MARTHA TOWNS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROB WETZLER
