Lakewood Hospital Foundation’s Starry Night gala sold out with 600 people gathered in a tented area on Lakewood’s Belle Avenue — right between the hospital and the hospital garage. Everything about the n
ight suggested a gigantic block party. Music by the Lakewood-based Chris Vance Quintet added to the atmosphere, restrained so attendees could interact. Food stations provided Asian fusion, California Spa, and Middle Eastern mezze.
Organized by a committee of the Lakewood Hospital Foundation and hospital staff members, Starry Night identified their locally unique Diabetes Assistance Initiative serving low-income patients as the recipient of the event’s funds. Clients of the DAI were on hand to tell their stories.
Starry Night was short on formal programs and long on fun. Guests participated in a Corks & Cash raffle, a silent auction, and an auction of artwork created by Cleveland Clinic Hospitals’ physicians. They also purchased “blinkee rings” representing a donation of a box of 100 lancets to test blood sugar for needy patients. An apt touch for this event. STORY BY ART THOMAS/PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROB WETZLER
