Many of us could benefit from a lesson in slowing down to smell the roses

By Martha Towns

My, my, my, haven’t we become a society of impatient citizens?

We are in such a hurry to get where we are going that we drive as if we were the only car on the road.

We have so many important telephone conversations each day that we are forced to walk around, head down, taking, making or checking our calls.

We are so busy all the time we are “crazy busy” and, if I hear that phrase one more time I may be forced to scream.

We are so addicted to our favorite programs that some producers have now put their whole series out at once. I speak of “House of Cards” for one, a show that is so dark, with a “hero” so soulless I may have to quit watching — afraid it might rub off on me.

No one wants to wait for anything anymore whether it’s their favorite television show, a seat at their favorite restaurant or a purchase of just about anything. Want it today? Order online and have it shipped tomorrow. Who cares if it costs extra?

Need an answer to a question? Never mind the library or the encyclopedia (if you still have one). What do you think Google is for? What is Amazon for? Why to fulfill your every wish almost as fast as you can wish it.

I can’t think of a single thing that is not available online. Want tickets to a London theater or a tour in Barcelona? How about a “skip the line” ticket for the Eiffel Tower? See what I mean? You can find everything you need for a trip to anywhere you want to go from the comfort of your own home and your favorite chair. The world is at your fingertips.

But I digress. One of the great reasons to slow down is to savor the world around you. Impatient young people need to learn to wait. The rest of us want to stop and smell the roses or the peonies or anything else that’s in bloom. If you don’t have time to admire a garden or stop to talk to an adorable baby, you are missing much. One thing you really don’t want to do is waste time by watching bad shows of any kind or reading books that haven’t grabbed you by the second chapter.

Just slow down and watch in bemusement as the world whirls in a frenzy around you.
