MedWish International “Moxie Anniversary Party”

Twenty years is a landmark in the fickle restaurant business. So to celebrate two decades of  delectable dining in Beachwood, Moxie the Restaurant called the chefs home and sent the proceeds overseas.

Making the home-grown celebration a global affair benefitting MedWish International was a matter of neighborly familiarity. “Moxie has been in the neighborhood for 20 years and Med Wish for 25 years,” said Jon Gross, president of the Red Restaurant Group. “We basically grew up together, and we’ve helped a lot of people.”

The birthday bash spread across an array of culinary delights, prepared by a bevy of Moxie alumni. Among the kitchen’s veterans: Tim Bando of Grove Hill, with his duck on couscous; Jonathan Bennett of the Red Group, with his slow-cooked beef brisket over cheese grits; Sean St. Clair of Nouveau with house-made bourbon-spiked cider; and Jake Orosz of The Fairmount, with roasted Brussels sprouts. Drew Racin came all the way from Hilton Head, N.C, with a tray of braised octopus for the occasion. Did we mention Robert Ledzianowksi’s chocolate cremiuex with peanut butter dust?

Founded in 1993 by Beachwood’s Dr. Lee Ponsky, MedWish International repurposes durable medical equipment, such as pre-used wheelchairs, outdated film x-ray machines, and crutches, from 116 US hospitals. According to MedWish, American hospitals discard millions of tons of outdated but safe  and sterile supplies each year, due to stringent US regulations and state-of-the-art upgrading.

MedWish collects, sorts and redistributes the supplies to health services in 109 countries, and also responds to emergency needs, including recent shipments to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. By repurposing supplies that would otherwise fill garbage dumps, MedWish helps save lives as well as the environment. For more information on MedWish programs, visit medwish.org.
