Meredith A. Cowden Foundation “Six Courses for a Cure Dinner”

The eighth annual Six Courses for a Cure Dinner to benefit the Meredith A. Cowden Foundation took place on a beautiful August evening at the Fairlawn Country Club. This year there were 145 guests in attendance for the gourmet dinner with auction that was held to raise money for funding blood cancer and Graft vs. Host Disease research and awareness. Chef Roger Thomas flew into Akron from Beverly Hills and was the coordinating chef for the dinner. Altogether six Chefs prepared six unique dishes that were each paired with their own wines. The first course, prepared by Chef Roger was a deliciously refreshing ginger carrot soup that was served cold with crab, cucumber and opal basil, accompanied by Weinkelter Kabinet Reisling.

This year the speaker was Peggy Burkhard who is the Executive Director of the National Bone Marrow Transfer Link. In her speech she announced that a drug had been FDA approved to treat Chronic Graft vs Host Disease and that patient advocacy groups with their dedicated fund raising attempts had helped that breakthrough in treatment happen.

In between meal courses Bob Hale took to the floor in his irrepressible auctioneer style, which led to much laughter from the participants. Items for this year’s benefit included one week at a condo in Colorado, a ride along with the Akron Police and six bottles of Buoncristiani Library Magnus. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALANA CLARK
