Cleveland is well known for embracing its many ethnic communities. So it made good sense for the Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel — long a proponent of supporting educational, business and cultural ties between Americans and Hungarians — to salute another area organization that celebrates our diversity. This year, the group’s annual black-tie fundraiser, Paprika! paid tribute to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, with several Garden representatives in attendance.
Young people dressed in colorful native costume greeted guests as they arrived at the Ritz-Carlton. Very quickly, the nearly 200 partygoers started looking over the silent auction which, again, featured several delicious looking, seven-layer dobes tortes. Those and other wonderful collectibles made reaching the group’s $50,000 goal an easy task. This was also a good time if you were brave enough to knock back a quick sip of fiery palinka brandy.
Before a gourmet Hungarian dinner, CHDP President Marika H. Megyimori introduced the evening’s honorees: event designer Stephen M. Tokar; Paul Burik, president of the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation; and businessman and photographer Allan Krulak. Perhaps inspired by the performance of folk dances by the Cleveland Hungarian Scout Folk Ensemble, several couples took to the dance floor…not for a fox trot or cha-cha, but for a quick-stepping czardas!
