Playhouse Square Partners
“Roam if you want to…” is the beginning of a song the B 52s knew how to belt out, but they’ve got nothing on the 1,000 guests in togas and otherworldly garb at the “Beware the Ides of March — Rome if you want to” Jump Back Ball XVII. The phrase, “come early and stay late” was never so relevant.
Held at the majestic State, Ohio and Allen Theatre lobbies and presented by National City, the Playhouse Square Partners know a little something about throwing a party. Sell-out crowds dancing, fresh bands performing, fortune telling, gambling, as well as drinking gummy apple shots and frolicking in the VIP lounge describe just a few of the festivities. Catered by the talented staff at Sammy’s, the event also featured chariot slot car races, the Cleveland Firefighter Memorial Pipes & Drums, alternative entertainment by Disc Jockey Packy Malley and bands Decade, Abby Normal and the Detroit Lean. And, let’s not forget about the grand raffle and silent auction – prizes fit for the Who’s Who in the Roman Empire.
The 17th annual event, which continues to be a showstopper among local benefits, helped to raise more than $120,000 for Playhouse Square.
The Partners, a young professional donor group, promotes and encourages the awareness, education and participation of Cleveland’s community of young professionals as volunteers and patrons in support of Playhouse Square, its theaters and events, according to its mission. With 400 members, the group has raised more than $2 million in the past 17 years. STORY BY SALI McSHERRY. PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN BASHIAN
