Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
The 10th annual Chef’s Fantasy dinner benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was one for the records!
Event chairmen were Joe Heider, president of the title sponsor Dawson Companies, and his vice chairman Tim Clepper. Held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the event started with cocktail receptions featuring hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Loretta Paganini, director of the International Culinary Arts & Sciences Institute, Chef Roger Thomas of Piatto Novo and Chef Jonathan Sawyer of Bar Cento. A beautiful ice sculpture was created by Joe Loiko of Images in Ice. The 300 guests bid on a silent auction and bought chances for a $1,000 Saks Fifth Avenue gift certificate before the eagerly awaited dinner coordinated by Chef Donna Chriszt of DISH Deli & Catering.
CF Chapter Executive Director Nate Cross welcomed everyone before introducing emcee Andy Baskin, NewsChannel 5 sports anchor and national CF advisory board member, whose brother Bruce succumbed to cystic fibrosis three years ago. Dinner chefs included Eric Williams of Momocho, Michael Symon of Lola and Lolita, Chad Ellis of Muse at the Ritz, Chris Cosentino of Incanto in San Francisco, Karen Small of Flying Fig and Heather Haviland of Lucky’s Café and Sweet Mosaic. Wines were provided by Cline Cellars and the Jacuzzi Family Vineyards.
Brooke Guthrie and her brother Brandon talked about their daily therapies managing cystic fibrosis, the chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system. Bob Hale of Benefit Auction Services conducted the live auction, concluding with “Bid for the Cure” pledges, with each donor receiving a copy of a book written by eight-year-old Julia Pittner, whose young brother Ben has CF.
The evening concluded with Patrick Perotti, partner at Dworken & Bernstein, presenting a $180,000 check, the money from unclaimed class action lawsuit settlement funds. More than $370,000 was raised at the event. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
