Playhouse Square went “Roaring Back to the 20s,” transforming the multi-theater complex into a meandering multi-level speakeasy for the 26th Annual Jump Back Ball. Fedoras, feathers and and flappers filled the halls as more than 1,000 patrons sipped champagne and cocktails, danced the Lindy and the Charleston with Get Hep Swing, and played it out at casino games on the mezzanine.
From the sword dancer at the George Gund Foundation Lobby reception to the shadow dancers in the upper level of the State Theatre stage, Le Femme Mystique Burlesque joined disc jockeys and live bands in entertaining the deco-dressed crowd. VIP patrons dined on chicken saltimbocca, with red, purple and yellow fingerling potatoes and winter hash in the Allen Theatre Lobby while the buffet on the State Theatre stage served seafood empanada with sweet corn and chili salsa and braised pot roast in a red wine reduction. Mini-pies filled with apples and nuts, deep chocolate brownies and sugary cookies sated the sweet tooth, all of it catered by Driftwood Restaurant Group.
From the opening reception vibes of Wesley Bright and the Honeytones to the late night musical fare of Abby Normal and the Detroit Lean, the party did the Great Gatsby proud. Raffle tickets, silent auction items and the gaming tables – with chips converted to raffle tickets – helped net $160,000 for the cultural programs of Playhouse Square.
