Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the 66th Secretary of State of the United States from 2005 to 2009, was the keynote speaker at the annual Presidential Scholarship Luncheon presented by the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation. The event raised more than $1 million for student scholarships.
Dr. Rice met briefly with Tri-C students representing the campus’ newspapers and student government prior to the sold-out luncheon at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Monica Robins, WKYC-TV Channel 3 evening news anchor and senior health correspondent, was emcee for the luncheon, with an invocation offered by the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr.
Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, president of Tri-C, that ranks tenth in the nation and has an enrollment of more then 30,000 students, spoke briefly before remarks by Tri-C Foundation Board Chairman Donald Misheff and Norma Lerner who introduced Dr. Rice.
“Higher education gives you the opportunity to become what you want to be,” said Dr. Rice whose own path was nurtured by her parents, both educators in her native state of Alabama. She shares her parents’ legacy to her as a young girl initially pursuing a career as a classically trained pianist to becoming a political scientist expert in Soviet Union politics in her new book “Extraordinary, Ordinary People.” Each of the 1,200 guests received copies of the book — read it — it is extraordinary.
An avid fan of the Cleveland Browns since her childhood, Dr. Rice was given a personalized Browns jacket, presented by Tri-C student Damon Fletcher who announced that the students established a scholarship fund in her name. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY KATHRYN RIDDLE
