Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital “Jumper Challenge 2014”

The Rainbow Jumper Challenge drew 225 guests to The Chagrin Valley Hunt Club in Gates Mills. Cindy Flynn, Mary Adelle Horner and Elizabeth Porter were the chairladies, and Bonnie Humphrey served as honorary chairperson of this fundraiser for Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital (RBCH).

The evening began with mingling, cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres before everyone took their seats in anticipation of the jumping competition. There were 14 horse-and-rider teams. Each was introduced before proceeding through the jumping course. Every jump was assigned a point value, depending on the degree of difficulty. To bid on a team in the Calcutta-style auction, guests raised their bid numbers, with the highest bid winning. At the end, the victorious team with the most points was D.E. Elghanayan riding a Holsteiner named, Candace. Mrs. Porter, president and head trainer of Wilde Fields at White North Stables in Hunting Valley, presided over the jumping competition, with assistance from auctioneer Bob Hale of Benefit Auction Services. The elegant affair continued inside the clubhouse with dinner and dancing.

The event raised more than $160,000, according to Sharon Klonowski, director of Circle of Friends at RBCH. Proceeds support pediatric services. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE R. MERK
