“Ride the Rainbow Gala”

The “Ride the Rainbow Gala” was an exercise in elegance, from the incredible transformation of Public Hall to the ladies’ gowns. Everyone took “black tie preferred” as an invitation to break out the finery, and it was indeed a splendid sight.
VIPs had their own party an hour before the rest of the guests arrived, with the first chance to bid on incredible silent auction items. This event takes more than 18 months to plan, and the effort showed in the unique offerings that helped raise more than $800,000 for Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. “Experiences” were popular this year: a tour of the new Neo-Natal ICU with the curator of University Hospital’s art curator; the chance to be a floral designer for a day; or a peek behind the scenes at American Greetings or the Cavs’ new practice facility, among others. The big guns came out for the live auction, kicking off with a 125-bottle “instant” cellar of fine wines plus tasting party (that one went for $13,000).
Chairs Dinah Kolesar, Manisha Ahuja Sethi and Joyce Wald wisely went with multiple food stations as the best way to serve the 1,300 guests quickly and efficiently. Table settings were stunning, with tablecloths in a rainbow of rich fall jewel tones and centerpieces of red roses or golden yellow orchids. Everything was exquisite. Bravo! STORY BY LINDA McMULLEN.
